What Is an ICS File? What It Means and How to Open One

An ICS file is a calendar file: it holds events (dates, times, places) that any calendar app can add. How to open one on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac, whether it is safe, and what to do when it won't open.

Have an .ics file? Open it here

See every event in the file, with its date and time, and anything that would stop it importing. Viewing and checking is free, with no sign-up, and the file stays in your browser.

You got an email attachment ending in .ics, or a website gave you one when you clicked "Add to calendar". Here is what it is and what to do with it.

Quick answer: An ICS file is a calendar file. It holds one or more events (the title, date, time, place and notes) in a standard format called iCalendar, so any calendar app can read it: Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook and the rest. Open it and your calendar app offers to add the events. It is plain text, not a program.

What does .ics mean?

.ics is the file extension for an iCalendar file, so the file type is a plain-text calendar file. Its internet media type is text/calendar, which is how email apps and browsers know to offer it to your calendar. It isn't a document, a picture or a program: it only describes events.

What's inside an ICS file?

Open one in a text editor and you'll see lines like these:

BEGIN:VCALENDAR
VERSION:2.0
BEGIN:VEVENT
SUMMARY:Dentist appointment
DTSTART:20261104T153000Z
DTEND:20261104T160000Z
LOCATION:12 High Street
END:VEVENT
END:VCALENDAR

Each event sits between BEGIN:VEVENT and END:VEVENT: SUMMARY is the title, DTSTART and DTEND the start and end, LOCATION the place. One file can hold a single appointment or a whole season of fixtures. You never need to read this yourself; your calendar app does. (If you're curious about every field, see the ICS file format guide.)

Where ICS files come from

  • Invitations and bookings: meeting invites, flight and hotel confirmations, doctor and restaurant bookings.
  • "Add to calendar" buttons on event pages, ticket sites and webinars.
  • Schedules: school terms, exam timetables, sports fixtures and work rotas.
  • AI chatbots: ChatGPT, Gemini and others will write one when you ask them to put something in your calendar. These are often slightly broken (see below).

Just want to see what's in it without adding anything? Paste or open it in the ICS viewer. It lists every event and works in any browser.

Is an ICS file safe to open?

An ICS file is plain text. It can't install anything or run code on your device. The risk is the same as with any email: an event from a stranger can carry a link to a scam website in its notes. Only add calendar files from senders you recognise, and don't click links inside an event you didn't expect.

Why won't my ICS file open?

The usual reasons:

  1. It was cut off or edited. A missing line at the end (often an END:VEVENT) makes the whole file unreadable.
  2. It came from an AI chatbot. Missing required fields and malformed dates are common in files written by ChatGPT, Gemini and others.
  3. Your phone doesn't know which app should open it. Android in particular may not offer a calendar app for .ics files.
  4. The times are wrong after importing. That is a time zone problem in the file; see time zones in calendar events.

Paste the file into the ICS validator to see exactly what's wrong, then click Fix: it repairs the common problems for free. If Google Calendar is the one refusing it, see Google Calendar import failed.

Can I turn an ICS file into a PDF or a spreadsheet?

Yes. To print a schedule or send it to someone who doesn't use a calendar app, use ICS to PDF; for Excel or Google Sheets, use ICS to CSV. Both show you the events before you download.

Can I make my own ICS file?

Yes, without writing any code. Type or paste the details ("Dentist, Nov 4 at 3:30pm, 12 High Street") into the text to calendar converter, or fill in a form with the ICS file generator. Got a schedule as a PDF or a spreadsheet? Use PDF to ICS or CSV to ICS.
