1. Select the .ics file in Finder.

Open an ICS File on Windows

With Outlook (Desktop)

1. Double-click the .ics file. If Outlook is installed, it opens a preview of the event.
2. Click Save & Close to add it to your calendar, or close the window to discard it.

If Outlook is not your default calendar app, right-click the file, select Open with, and choose Outlook.

With the new Outlook for Windows

Microsoft retired the old Windows Mail and Calendar app at the end of 2024; Windows 11 now opens calendar files in the new Outlook.

1. Open Outlook and go to Calendar.
2. Click Add calendar → Upload from file, choose the .ics file, pick a calendar and click Import.

No Outlook at all? Import the file into Google Calendar on the web, or view it in the ICS File Viewer.

From Mail or Messages

1. Tap the .ics attachment in the email or message.
2. iOS shows a preview of the event details.
3. Tap Add All to save the events to your calendar, or tap Done to close without saving.

From the Files App

1. Open the Files app and navigate to the .ics file.
2. Tap the file. The calendar preview appears automatically.
3. Tap Add All and choose the destination calendar.

From the Gmail or Outlook App

Attachments opened in the Gmail or Outlook app don't always hand off to Apple Calendar. Tap the attachment, tap the Share button, choose Save to Files, then open it from the Files app as above.

Via AirDrop

If someone sends you an ICS file via AirDrop, accept the transfer. iOS opens the calendar preview immediately so you can review and add the events.

Open an ICS File on Android

Android is where .ics files cause the most trouble: the Google Calendar app for Android cannot import .ics files. Google only lets you import from the Google Calendar website. That's why tapping the file often does nothing, or opens it as text. Here's what works, fastest first.

1. Open it with your phone's own calendar app

Samsung phones and some other Android phones come with a calendar app that can read .ics files.

1. Tap the .ics attachment in Gmail, or find it in Files / My Files → Downloads.
2. If Android asks which app to use, choose Calendar (Samsung Calendar or your phone's calendar), not a text viewer.
3. Check the events and tap Save or Add. Pick your Google account as the calendar so the events also appear in Google Calendar.

If no calendar app is offered, use method 2.

2. Import it on the Google Calendar website from your phone

You don't need a computer: the import page works in Chrome on Android once you switch it to the desktop version.

1. Download the .ics file to your phone (in Gmail, tap the download icon on the attachment).
2. Open Chrome and go to calendar.google.com.
3. Tap the ⋮ menu and tick Desktop site.
4. Tap the gear icon → Settings → Import & export.
5. Tap Select file from your computer, choose the .ics file from Downloads, pick a calendar and tap Import.

The events appear in the Google Calendar app on your phone a few seconds later.

3. Meeting invitations in Gmail

If the .ics came as a meeting invitation (an email asking you to RSVP), you don't need to open the file: Gmail shows the event at the top of the email with Yes / Maybe / No, and answering adds it to your Google Calendar.

4. View it without adding it

Just want to see the dates? Open the file in the ICS File Viewer in Chrome. It lists every event, and if the file is broken it can repair it.

Open an ICS File in Google Calendar

Google Calendar does not let you preview ICS files without importing them. To import:

1. Open calendar.google.com in a browser. Import is not available in the mobile app; on a phone, switch the browser to Desktop site first.
2. Click the gear icon in the top right and select Settings.
3. Click Import & Export in the left sidebar.
4. Click Select file from your computer and choose your .ics file.
5. Pick the destination calendar and click Import.

If you just want to preview the events without importing, use the ICS File Viewer instead.

Troubleshooting

"ICS file won't open"

The file may be corrupted or incorrectly formatted. Upload it to the ICS File Viewer to check for validation errors. Common issues include missing BEGIN:VCALENDAR tags or incorrect date formats.

"ICS file opens as text"

Your operating system does not have a default calendar app associated with .ics files. Right-click the file, select Open with, and choose your calendar app (Apple Calendar, Outlook, etc.). On Windows, you can set the default under Settings > Default Apps.

"Events show the wrong time"

This usually means the file uses UTC times and your calendar app is not converting them to your local time zone. Check that your calendar app's time zone setting matches your location. On Mac, go to Calendar > Settings > Advanced and enable Time zone support. On iPhone, check Settings > Calendar > Time Zone Override.
