How to Open an ICS File (Online, Mac, Windows, iPhone & Android)

Below are the fastest ways to open an ICS file on every platform.

Open an ICS File Online (Fastest Method)

The quickest way to view an ICS file is with our free ICS File Viewer. No downloads, no signups, no importing into your calendar.

  1. Go to text-2-ics.com/tools/ics-viewer.
  2. Drag and drop your .ics file onto the page (or click to browse).
  3. Instantly see every event in the file, including dates, times, locations, and descriptions.

This is the best option when you just want to check what is inside an ICS file without adding anything to your calendar.

Open an ICS File on Mac

macOS has built-in support for ICS files. You have a few options:

Double-Click the File

  1. Find the .ics file in Finder.
  2. Double-click it. Apple Calendar opens and asks which calendar to add the events to.
  3. Click OK to import, or Cancel if you only wanted to preview.

Quick Look Preview

  1. Select the .ics file in Finder.
  2. Press the spacebar. Quick Look shows a preview of the event details without importing anything.

View the Raw Contents

Right-click the file and open it with TextEdit or any text editor. You will see the structured calendar data (properties like SUMMARY, DTSTART, and LOCATION). This is useful for debugging or verifying event details.

Open an ICS File on Windows

With Outlook (Desktop)

  1. Double-click the .ics file. If Outlook is installed, it opens a preview of the event.
  2. Click Save & Close to add it to your calendar, or close the window to discard it.

If Outlook is not your default calendar app, right-click the file, select Open with, and choose Outlook.

With Windows Calendar (Mail & Calendar App)

  1. Double-click the .ics file.
  2. The Calendar app opens with a preview. Click Add to calendar to save the event.

View the Raw Contents

Right-click the file, select Open with, and choose Notepad. You will see the plain-text calendar data, which can help if you need to verify the event details or troubleshoot errors.

Open an ICS File on iPhone and iPad

From Mail or Messages

  1. Tap the .ics attachment in the email or message.
  2. iOS shows a preview of the event details.
  3. Tap Add All to save the events to your calendar, or tap Done to close without saving.

From the Files App

  1. Open the Files app and navigate to the .ics file.
  2. Tap the file. The calendar preview appears automatically.
  3. Tap Add All and choose the destination calendar.

Via AirDrop

If someone sends you an ICS file via AirDrop, accept the transfer. iOS opens the calendar preview immediately so you can review and add the events.

Open an ICS File on Android

From Email or File Manager

  1. Tap the .ics file attachment in Gmail or your file manager.
  2. Android prompts you to open it with Google Calendar (or another calendar app).
  3. Review the event details and tap Save to add it.

Import via Google Calendar on the Web

If the file does not open on your phone, transfer it to your computer and import through the Google Calendar web app:

  1. Go to calendar.google.com.
  2. Click the gear icon and select Settings.
  3. Choose Import & Export from the sidebar.
  4. Click Select file from your computer, choose your .ics file, and click Import.

Open an ICS File in Google Calendar

Google Calendar does not let you preview ICS files without importing them. To import:

  1. Open calendar.google.com on a desktop browser (import is not available in the mobile app).
  2. Click the gear icon in the top right and select Settings.
  3. Click Import & Export in the left sidebar.
  4. Click Select file from your computer and choose your .ics file.
  5. Pick the destination calendar and click Import.

If you just want to preview the events without importing, use the ICS File Viewer instead.

Troubleshooting

"ICS file won't open"

The file may be corrupted or incorrectly formatted. Upload it to the ICS File Viewer to check for validation errors. Common issues include missing BEGIN:VCALENDAR tags or incorrect date formats.

"ICS file opens as text"

Your operating system does not have a default calendar app associated with .ics files. Right-click the file, select Open with, and choose your calendar app (Apple Calendar, Outlook, etc.). On Windows, you can set the default under Settings > Default Apps.

"Events show the wrong time"

This usually means the file uses UTC times and your calendar app is not converting them to your local time zone. Check that your calendar app's time zone setting matches your location. On Mac, go to Calendar > Settings > Advanced and enable Time zone support. On iPhone, check Settings > Calendar > Time Zone Override.
