Gmail Not Adding Flights to Calendar: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Gmail promises to automatically add flight confirmations to Google Calendar, but it often fails. Here's why this happens and how to fix it.

Why Gmail Fails to Add Flights

  • Non-Standard Emails: Third-party booking sites (Expedia, Kayak) often use email formats that Gmail's parser doesn't recognize.
  • Disabled Settings: "Smart Features" in Gmail or "Events from Gmail" in Google Calendar may be turned off.
  • Spam Folder: The confirmation email may have landed in your spam folder.
  • Complex Itineraries: Multi-stop flights or complex bookings can confuse the parser.
  • Minimalist Confirmations: Budget airlines sometimes send emails with insufficient details for Gmail to process.

Check Your Google Settings First

Start by making sure the right settings are enabled:

In Gmail:

  1. Go to Settings > See all settings.
  2. Under the General tab, enable Smart features and personalization.

In Google Calendar:

  1. Go to Settings > Events from Gmail.
  2. Check the box for Automatically add events from Gmail to my calendar.

Other Workarounds

If the settings are correct and it's still not working, try these:

  • Forward the Email: Forward the booking confirmation to yourself. This can trigger Gmail's parser to re-evaluate the email.
  • Use the Airline App: Most airline mobile apps have an "Add to Calendar" feature that generates an ICS file.
  • Manual Entry: Create the event yourself, including the airline, flight number, confirmation code, and airports.

Use a Flight Converter Tool

If none of the above work, you can use a dedicated converter:

  1. Copy the flight details from your confirmation email.
