You add an event on your iPhone, but it doesn't appear on your Mac. Or worse, events disappear entirely. Calendar sync issues between Apple devices are frustrating, but they're usually fixable. This guide walks through every solution, from quick fixes to full resets.
Quick Fixes (Try These First)
Fix 1: Check Internet Connection
Obvious but often overlooked:
On iPhone:
- Open Settings → Wi-Fi
- Ensure connected to network
- Try opening Safari to verify connection
On Mac:
- Click Wi-Fi icon in menu bar
- Verify connection
- Try loading a webpage
If using cellular: iCloud calendar sync works over cellular, but check Settings → Cellular → Calendar is enabled.
Fix 2: Force Sync
iPhone:
- Open Calendar app
- Tap Calendars at bottom
- Pull down to refresh
- Wait for spinner to complete
Mac:
- Open Calendar app
- Click View → Refresh Calendars
- Or press
Cmd + R
Fix 3: Restart Devices
The classic fix that works more often than it should:
iPhone: Hold power + volume → Slide to power off → Wait 30 seconds → Turn on
Mac: Apple menu → Restart
After restart, open Calendar on both devices and check sync.
Verify iCloud Calendar Settings
On iPhone
- Open Settings
- Tap your name (Apple ID) at top
- Tap iCloud
- Scroll to Calendars
- Ensure toggle is ON (green)
If it's off, turn it on and wait a few minutes for sync.
On Mac
- Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS)
- Click your name / Apple ID
- Click iCloud
- Ensure Calendars is checked
Common Issue: Different Apple IDs
Symptom: Calendars work fine on each device but don't sync between them.
Cause: Devices signed into different Apple IDs.
Check:
- iPhone: Settings → [Your Name] → View Apple ID
- Mac: System Settings → Apple ID
If different, sign out and sign in with the same Apple ID on both devices.
Fix Missing Calendars
Calendar Not Visible
Sometimes the calendar exists but isn't shown:
iPhone:
- Open Calendar app
- Tap Calendars at bottom
- Ensure the calendar has a checkmark
- Tap Done
Mac:
- Open Calendar
- Look at left sidebar (View → Show Calendar List if hidden)
- Ensure checkbox is selected for your calendar
Calendar Deleted Accidentally
Recover from iCloud:
- Go to iCloud.com
- Sign in with your Apple ID
- Click Calendar
- Click gear icon (Settings) → Advanced
- Click Restore Calendars
- Select a restore point from before deletion
This restores all calendars to that point in time.
Fix Sync Delays
Events Take Hours to Sync
Cause: iCloud sync isn't instant—it can take up to 15 minutes normally, longer if servers are busy.
Speed it up:
- Force sync on both devices (see Fix 2 above)
- Make a small change on one device
- Check Apple System Status: apple.com/support/systemstatus
Events Only Sync One Direction
Symptom: iPhone events appear on Mac, but Mac events don't appear on iPhone (or vice versa).
Causes:
- One device is offline
- Calendar app is set to wrong default calendar
- One device hasn't refreshed
Fix - Check Default Calendar:
iPhone: Settings → Calendar → Default Calendar → Select iCloud calendar
Mac: Calendar → Preferences → General → Default calendar → Select iCloud calendar
Reset Calendar Sync
If nothing else works, reset the sync:
Option 1: Toggle iCloud Calendars Off/On
iPhone:
- Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud
- Toggle Calendars OFF
- Choose Keep on My iPhone when prompted
- Wait 30 seconds
- Toggle Calendars ON
- Choose Merge
Mac:
- System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud
- Uncheck Calendars
- Choose Keep on This Mac
- Wait 30 seconds
- Check Calendars again
- Choose Merge
Option 2: Sign Out of iCloud (Nuclear Option)
Warning: This is disruptive. Only do this if nothing else works.
iPhone:
- Settings → [Your Name]
- Scroll down → Sign Out
- Keep a copy of data when prompted
- Restart iPhone
- Sign back in
- Wait for sync to complete
Mac:
- System Settings → Apple ID
- Sign Out
- Keep copies of data
- Restart Mac
- Sign back in
This forces a full resync from iCloud servers.
Fix Third-Party Calendar Sync Issues
If you're syncing Google Calendar or Outlook to Apple Calendar:
Google Calendar Not Syncing
Check account is added:
- iPhone: Settings → Calendar → Accounts
- Mac: Calendar → Preferences → Accounts
- Ensure Google account is listed and Calendars is enabled
Re-add account:
- Remove the Google account
- Re-add: Settings → Calendar → Accounts → Add Account → Google
- Sign in and enable Calendars
Check Google Calendar settings:
- On Google Calendar (web), click gear → Settings
- Go to calendar settings
- Ensure calendar is not hidden
Outlook Calendar Not Syncing
Check account:
- Settings → Calendar → Accounts
- Ensure Outlook/Exchange account is listed
- Toggle Calendars off/on for that account
Re-authenticate: Some Outlook accounts require periodic re-authentication:
- Remove account
- Re-add with current password
- Enable Calendars
For more on importing from other calendars, see our Complete ICS Import Guide.
Fix Specific Event Issues
Single Event Not Syncing
If most events sync but one doesn't:
Check the event:
- Open the problematic event
- Verify it's in an iCloud calendar (not "On My iPhone")
- Make a small edit (add a space to title)
- Save
Recreate the event:
- Copy event details
- Delete the event
- Create new event with same details
- Check if it syncs
Recurring Events Not Syncing
Recurring events can have sync issues if the recurrence rule is complex:
- Open the recurring event
- Edit recurrence to simpler pattern
- Save and check sync
- If needed, delete and recreate with simpler recurrence
See our RRULE Generator for creating compatible recurrence rules.
Events Show on One Device Only
Check which calendar the event is in:
- Open the event
- Look for "Calendar" field
- If it says "On My iPhone" or "On My Mac" — that's local only
- Move to iCloud calendar: Edit → Change Calendar → Select iCloud calendar
Check Apple System Status
Sometimes the problem is on Apple's end:
- Visit apple.com/support/systemstatus
- Look for iCloud Calendar status
- If there's an issue, wait for Apple to fix it
You can also check downdetector.com/status/icloud for user reports.
Prevent Future Sync Issues
Best Practices
Use iCloud as default:
- Set iCloud as default calendar on all devices
- Avoid "On My iPhone/Mac" calendars unless intentional
Keep iOS/macOS updated:
- Sync bugs are often fixed in updates
- Settings → General → Software Update
Don't switch accounts:
- Pick one Apple ID for all devices
- Stick with it
Regular backups:
- Export important calendars to ICS files periodically
- Use our ICS Viewer to verify exports
Monitor Sync Health
Quick test:
- Create test event on iPhone: "Sync Test [date/time]"
- Wait 5 minutes
- Check Mac for the event
- Delete test event
Do this weekly if you've had sync issues.
When to Contact Apple Support
Contact Apple if:
- Sync hasn't worked for 24+ hours after trying all fixes
- You see error messages about iCloud
- System Status shows no issues but sync still fails
- You've tried the nuclear option (sign out/in) and it didn't help
Before contacting support:
- Note your Apple ID
- Note iOS and macOS versions
- List which fixes you've tried
- Take screenshots of any error messages
Pro Tips
- Patience: iCloud sync can take 15+ minutes after changes
- One change at a time: When troubleshooting, change one thing, then wait and test
- Check all devices: If you have iPad, Apple Watch, etc., check those too
- iCloud storage: If your iCloud storage is full, sync may fail—check Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Storage
- Date/time: Ensure date and time are set automatically on both devices (Settings → General → Date & Time)
